Why going on holiday to Egypt?

Egypt is the oldest tourist destination on earth. Ancient Greeks and Romans started the trend, coming to goggle at the cyclopean scale of the Pyramids and the Colossi of Thebes. At the onset of colonial times, Napoleon and the British in turn looted Egypt’s treasures to fill their national museums, sparking off a trickle of Grand Tourists that, by the 1860s, had grown into a flood of travellers, packaged for their Nile cruises and Egyptological lectures by the enterprising Thomas Cook.Today, the attractions of the country are little different. The focus of most visits remains the great monuments of the Nile Valley, combined with a few days spent exploring the souks, mosques and madrassas of Islamic Cairo. However, possibilities for Egyptian travel also encompass snorkelling and diving along the Red Sea coasts, remote oases and camel trips into the mountains of Sinai, or visits to the Coptic monasteries of the Eastern Desert.

The land itself is a freak of nature, whose lifeblood is the River Nile. From the Sudanese border to the shores of the Mediterranean, the Nile Valley and its Delta are flanked by arid wastes, the latter as empty as the former are teeming with people. This stark duality between fertility and desolation is fundamental to Egypt’s character and has shaped its development since prehistoric times, imparting continuity to diverse cultures and peoples over five millennia. It is a sense of permanence and timelessness that is buttressed by religion, which pervades every aspect of life. Although the pagan cults of ancient Egypt are as moribund as its legacy of mummies and temples, their ancient fertility rites and processions of boats still hold their place in the celebrations of Islam and Christianity.

The result is a multi-layered culture, which seems to accord equal respect to ancient and modern. The peasants ( fellaheen) of the Nile and Bedouin tribes of the desert live much as their ancestors did a thousand years ago. Other communities include the Nubians of the far south, and the Coptic Christians, who trace their ancestry back to pharaonic times. What unites them is a love of their homeland, extended family ties, dignity, warmth and hospitality towards strangers. Though most visitors are drawn to Egypt by its monuments, the enduring memory is likely to be of its people and their way of life.

Genital HPV Infection

Human Papilloma Virus in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Impact of Condom Use on Its Spread

genital hpv infectionHuman papilloma virus (HPV) is used to describe more than 100 different types of related viruses. HPV can be transmitted through contact with skin surfaces or genital fluids infected with the virus. Genital HPV infection is usually, though not always, sexually transmitted. While many other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been associated with increased risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, this association has not been observed for HPV. However, persons with HIV/AIDS seem to be at increased risk for HPV infection and associated sequelae of HPV infections such as genital warts and dysplasia.

Cervical and anal/genital cancers, precancerous cervical tissue abnormalities, genital warts and wart-like lesions, and cervical cell dysplasia have been associated with infection with specific HPV types. Cervical cancer is the leading cancer among women in Africa.  The report of a workshop sponsored by the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH/NIAID) within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the evidence of the effectiveness of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) concludes that co-infection with HPV and HIV may lead to increased risk of cervical neoplasia and anal cancers among persons infected with HIV, as HIV suppresses the body’s immune system.

There is little known about the prevalence of HPV in sub-Saharan Africa. Few studies on the prevalence of any STI, let alone HPV, have been conducted in the region. Of the available recent published reports, HPV research often covers specific populations in geographically specific areas of a country. For example, a 2001 study of HPV genotypes among 262 women in a rural area of Mozambique found that 40 percent of women in the study tested positive for at least one type of HPV. A 2003 study of 429 female family planning clinic attendees in urban Nairobi, Kenya, found an HPV prevalence of 44 percent. In addition, research sample sizes have been small and non-representative, making it difficult to generalize to entire populations, and advanced definitive diagnostic methods for HPV have only recently been made available. There have been no national or sentinel surveillance programs to assess HPV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately HPV prevalence in the region.

Additional HPV epidemiological research in developing countries is needed to develop more effective HPV and cervical cancer prevention strategies. The focus of this research should include the prevalence of specific HPV strains associated with cervical cancer, the prevalence of cofactors affecting the progression to cervical cancer, region-specific risk factors for HPV infection and cervical cancer, and the association between HIV infection and HPV epidemiology. Screening and treatment programs for cervical cancer are also recommended to prevent cervical cancer deaths in sub-Saharan Africa.

Condoms have been shown to be effective in preventing the transmission of many STIs, including HIV/AIDS. Because HPV is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact and genital fluids, HPV is not entirely preventable through condom use. Laboratory and field-based research to evaluate the effectiveness of condoms in preventing HPV transmission has been limited, but correct and consistent use of condoms can be expected to decrease (though not eliminate) the risk of transmitting HPV. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a number of studies show an association between condom use and a reduced risk of HPV-associated diseases, including genital warts, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. The previously mentioned 2001 NIAID workshop report recommended that robust research be pursued to ascertain the true benefits and limitations of an available risk reduction technology latex male condoms for preventing the transmission of STDs. At the same time, research on additional prevention technologies and behavioral interventions must also be pursued in order to advance the health of the public in the U.S. and abroad. What is cervical cancer?

Cancer can grow on a woman’s cervix—the same way it can grow on other body parts. Most times, cervical cancer forms slowly. Cervical cancer often does not cause symptoms until it is advanced. When cervical cancer is advanced, it may cause abnormal bleeding, discharge, or pain.

The cervix is the opening of your uterus (womb). It is part of a woman’s reproductive system.

What causes cervical cancer?

A virus, called genital human papillomavirus (pap-ah-LOmah- VYE-rus)—also just called HPV—can cause normal cells on your cervix to turn abnormal. Over many years, abnormal cells can turn into cancer if they are not found and treated by your doctor. It can take 10 to 15 years (or more) for cells to change from normal to abnormal, and then into cancer. Abnormal cells are sometimes called “pre-cancer” because they are not normal, but they are not yet cancer.

You cannot see or feel HPV or these cell changes on your cervix.

The Importance Of Vitamins For A Long And Healthy Life

The constant need for vitamin-rich food in your diet is an oft-told tale, and one which I shall not repeat here, since it is covered fully in other articles. Yet there are two facts about vitamins which you may not know, and which deserve to be included here. The first little-known fact about vitamins is that proteins and vitamins work together. The chemical agents called enzymes, that do the greatest part of the digestive work for your body, are all made of protein (at least those which have been analyzed successfully so far). Certain of these protein enzymes actually take part in your body’s use of its vitamins, while certain vitamins affect the body’s production of protein enzymes-a sort of ‘mutual aid society.’ In other words, you can’t expect the vitamins in your food (or the vitamin supplement you take) to give you all the benefits you expect from them, unless you also provide your body with ample quantities of protein foods each day.

Nutritional cience has learned that successful vitamin therapy depends upon the presence of adequate high-proteins in the diet. Some biochemists even go so far as to declare that iacin (an important member of the vitamin B-complex group) is actually formed from an amino acid (protein) in the first lace. Thus, you learn that your vitamin needs should always begin with a high-protein diet. Vegetables, fruits and grains should have been grown on mineral-rich soil, for it must be remembered that foods grown in mineral deficient soil may also be poor in vitamins. Even the trace minerals have a direct effect on the vitamin content of a crop. For example, plants deficient in boron will also contain little vitamin C. Only when the good earth is mineral-rich can it produce food plants containing all the nutrients vital to the health of the men and animals that feed on them. Much of the meat and poultry that should be a rich source of the various vitamins in the B-complex group, riboflavin especially, in reality contain inadequately varied amounts of these food elements, because the animals and fowls were fed on plants and grains which, in turn, were mineral-starved from being grown on depleted soils.

Fruits and vegetables may appear fresh and green in the market, yet be grossly lacking in vitamins, and minerals as well. Nearly half of all farm lands and truck gardens are occupied by tenant farmers who are far more interested in immediate profits than they are in improving the landlords’ soil, or in sending to market foods containing all the minerals and vitamins you and I need for maximum health. Therefore, unless you grow your own fruits and vegetables on organically, non-chemically fertilized soil-or can purchase them from farms and gardens containing carefully enriched soil to your certain knowledge-there is every possibility you are not obtaining in your food all the vitamins and minerals needed to keep you looking and feeling young. It is easy to say ‘Get your daily vitamins in your foods.’ The realistic fact is that our foods just do not supply all the vitamins (and minerals) that we should have.

We are living in an atomic age. Our defense program is geared to high explosives, our production lines are miracles of speed. And our food has ‘gone modern’ to keep pace. It is now being shot out of cannons, super-refined and shaped and coated with highly intriguing artificial preparations. Some of the products have been so highly transformed they are hard to recognize as food. The case against nutritionally poor ‘refined’ food-(which has very unrefined manners once it is inside your body)-is growing daily. Commercial corn meal is one case in point. By the time it reaches your kitchen, it has been largely deprived of its natural vitamin and mineral food values. It has been proved that chickens fed on such refined corn meal die in less than fifty days. When it has been robbed of its natural vitamins and minerals, food is no longer ‘food’ in the true sense of the word. I wish I could tell you to eat your meat, eggs, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and seed cereals with every assurance that your body would be supplied with sufficient vitamins to keep it healthily youthful-and leave the subject at that. But I cannot. We who buy our food at the market, or who eat most of our meals away from home, are at the mercy of today’s mineral-starved, eroded, artificially fertilized, overcultivated soilsto say nothing of all the vitamin-ignorant cooks.

For that reason, in addition to good eating, the safest course is to supplement your Eat-and-Grow-Younger program with a reliably manufactured vitamin-mineral concentrate.
